Twice a year is the standard answer. For many patients, it’s correct. But preventive procedures in dentistry work best when they’re matched to individual risk, not a blanket schedule.
Low-risk patients — no active gum disease, good home care, no systemic conditions that affect oral health — can often manage with two visits per year.
Higher-risk patients — active or history of gum disease, smokers, diabetics, patients with dry mouth, those undergoing chemotherapy, or anyone with a history of frequent cavities — typically benefit from visits every three to four months. This isn’t upselling. It’s the interval at which professional cleaning can actually stay ahead of the disease.
For children, family preventive dentistry starts early. First visits around age one to two help establish habits, catch developmental issues, and make dental care feel normal rather than frightening. Preventive and diagnostic dental services for pediatric patients are part of what we do across all ages at Millennium Aesthetics.
The case for early detection is simple: problems found at a checkup are almost always cheaper, faster, and less painful to treat than problems found because something started hurting.
